You’ve always been told you need to make a great first impression on a job interview. Most of the time, that suggestion implies you need to wear a suit or other professional clothing. What if you can’t afford the latest high-power fashion? What if your budget doesn’t allow you to get that designer suit that will knock their socks off? You don’t have to break the bank to dress well and make a great impression. Here are some thrifty tips to help you out.

Department Stores

You probably can’t go to the high-end New York designers, but that doesn’t mean some of them can’t come to you. Department stores that you’ll find at your local mall have name brand clothes for less. Unlike buying online, going into the stores gives you the advantage of trying on clothes, so you know the fit is right and see how you look. Consider stores like Macy’s, Dillard’s, Sears, or any other department store near you.

Big Box Stores

Also called Superstores or Supercenters, a big box store is a massive retailer that sells multiple categories of items. The two most prominent examples in the U.S. are Target and Walmart. You may not think of them as the most fashion-forward clothing sellers, but with a little patience, you can find some great professional outfits that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Second-Hand Stores

If you’re willing to take on more of a treasure hunt, consider visiting your local second-hand store. People donate great clothes all the time, and you are likely to find something that will work perfectly for your next interview. It just may take a little extra searching, but the bargains can’t be beaten when you can potentially find a suit for less than $10.

If you are unable to afford professional attire for an interview, don’t despair. There are multiple organizations, both local and national, that assist job seekers in getting clothes to make a great impression. For men, the best-known organization is Career Gear, which helps with resume and career coaching along with clothes for the interview. For women, check out Dress for Success. They provide similar career counseling as well as access to the Dress for Success boutique to get the best clothes for their interview.
