How to Address Being Fired From a Previous Job in an Interview

At the time it happens, being fired can feel like the end of your career. But it doesn’t have to be. After a period of self-pity, which is perfectly acceptable, it’s time to pick yourself up and dust yourself off. By recovering from these mistakes and moving on, you can grow as a professional and possibly find an even better position for your long-term goals and aspirations. But to find that next job, you need to put yourself out there, which means explaining why you left your last position. How do you handle that?

 

Be Honest

Asking why you left your last job is a pretty standard question and not designed to catch you in any deliberate misleading statements. But if you answer insincerely, it will catch up to you quickly. Reference checks do happen, and it will be pretty easy for a potential employer to find out the real reason you are no longer at your previous job. Firings happen, so embrace it and use it to find an even better environment.

 

Demonstrate What You’ve Learned

Every aspect of our lives is a learning experience. Being fired is just one of many possible lessons. You know why you were fired, so use that information to your advantage. For example, if you had trouble arriving to work on time each day, create a routine to help you be on time. Or, you can look for companies that offer a more flexible schedule or work-from-home options. Communicate what you’ve learned from the experience to the potential employer.

 

Remain Positive

It’s totally okay for you to be angry about the situation. Once you’re back on the job market, it’s essential you maintain a positive attitude about what happened and what your expectations are for the future. If you speak poorly about a past employer, a hiring manager is far less likely to bring you onboard for fear of similar occurrences in their workplace.
