Graduation is upon us. Even with the complicated situation at the end of the 2020 school year, students will be graduating and looking for work. Especially in uncertain times, having an excellent strategy to find employment after graduation will be essential. So how do you go about finding a job after college? Here are some tips to get you started.

Customize Each Resume

It sounds like a lot of extra work, but It will be worth it in the end. When you customize your resume, and cover letter, for each employer, you’re sending the message that you care about where you apply. It shows them you’ve done your research and that you’re not just looking for any job. Use the resume as a way to showcase how you would help their company specifically.

Stay on Top of Job Postings

It’s a fast-moving world, and job postings can be easily lost just like other online communications. When you see a post on social media or a job board, don’t wait too long to respond. Spend a little time editing your resume to fit the position and write a cover letter that can be pasted into your email or the online application.

Tap into Your Alumni Network

Colleges have some of the best networking opportunities in the country. No matter where you went to school or where you want to work, there is someone in your community who has a shared experience. Your university will have resources for connecting to alumni. You can also use online networking sources such as LinkedIn or even Facebook to find professionals in your community who also graduated from your college. Reach out and connect.

Prepare for Your Interview

If you’ve not done a ton of professional interviewing in the past, you should practice before your first meetings. Interviewing is hard and can be very stressful. Even before you apply to jobs, take a look at some common interview questions to get a feel for what to expect. Once you’ve submitted your resume and scheduled interviews, prepare for the specific job by reading the description, looking at the company website, and coming up with a few right questions to ask about the job or the company.

Apply with a Staffing Service

Another way to find a great job just out of college is to work with a staffing partner. Recruiters can talk to you about your education and experience and help you find an opportunity that will be a great fit. Positions can be short-term to help you get the necessary skills or a long-term match for your career goals. Apply with a local staffing agency to increase your chances of finding a job quickly.
